  1. On March 4 Subhas had written, “Today or tomorrow I shall write another
    letter to you. Please call for it. It is beautiful here and quiet. Plenty of snow. How
    are you?” (Bose, Letters to Emilie, p. 28). Subhas added at the bottom of the letter,
    “Please destroy after perusal.” This historian is glad that Emilie disobeyed this in-
    struction.
