Rules of spelling

(a) After г, к, x, ж, ч, ш, щ do not write ы. Replace it by и.


(b) After ж, ч, ш, щ, ц do not write unstressed о. Replace it by e.


(c) After г, к, x, ж, ч, ш, щ, ц do not write я. Replace it by a.


(d) After г, к, x, ж, ч, ш, щ, ц do not write ю. Replace it by у.


Gender

Masculine nouns end in a consonant, -й or -ь.


Feminine nouns end in -a, -я, -ь.


Neuter nouns end in -о, -e, -ё, -мя.


Note: A small number of nouns ending in -а/-я which refer to males are
masculine, e.g. мужчи�на ‘man’. They decline as feminine nouns but
take masculine agreements.
