two, there does seem to have been a slight but discernible shift, away
from‘restoration’, towards compensation for the losses and injuries that
the ex-signiorhad incurred. On 19 September, Philip wrote to Florence,
demanding that envoys should be sent with whom he could discuss
damages. Nevertheless, matters reached such a pass that the king granted
Walter permission to take reprisals against the Florentine mercantile
