065 Cycle Touring Cuba

(Leana) #1

The family consisted of a mum, dad, grandmother (whom they took
care of) and a daughter who suffered from achondroplasia. I only
mentioned this as it came as a surprise to spot at least three people
suffering from dwarfism in Jamaica (considered excessive for such a
small island). The family was super kind, and despite the language
barrier, I could tell them where I was from and show them the map of
my cycle route. They were stunned one could do such a distance on a
bicycle (and at times, I am equally amazed, LOL).

I moved into the daughter’s room which fortunately had a regular
size bed, but as can be expected, the mirror proved somewhat tricky.
She kindly offered to share her cosmetics with me - too sweet. She
was immensely proud of having these items as in Cuba, any cosmetic
items, including soap and creams, were valuable. Even beggars
typically asked for soap and lotions instead of money.
