In speaking to an
acquaintance of mine a
couple of weeks ago, I was
telling him how incredible
this book was, as I’d read
it three times. His rather
off-the-cuff comment was:
“Well, if you’ve read one
book about the Holocaust,
you’ve read them all. How
much can a story change?”
To say I was flabbergasted
and dismayed is an
understatement. In reply,
I said, “Every person’s
experience, living through
the Holocaust, was different.
Everyone suffered, but each
suffered in his, or her, own
way. There are SO many
stories yet to be told that
we still don’t know.” In
response he stated, “Yeah,
well they’re all pretty much
the same.” Really?
Yes, there are countless
books written about this
horrendous period of time,
like My Daughter’s Keeper,
From the Dark We Rise, The
Book of Lost Names, The
Boy in the Striped Pajamas,
The Boy From Block 66,
All the Light We Cannot
See, The Nightengale, All
The Broken Places – and,
of course, Night , by Elie
Weisel, who wrote about
his heart-searing survival
as a teenager in a Nazi
death camp. These are just
a few of the books I’ve read
relating to the Holocaust
- and each story is utterly
compelling and unique in its
graphic details and horror of
what the Jews went through
during this heinous time in
history.
While most of the
books about the Holocaust
I’ve read, whether historical
fiction or actual history,
focus upon France, Germany
and Poland. This story
takes place in Greece, and
I was undeniably ashamed
when I didn’t realize how
geographically far the
Germans went in their quest
to round up Jews.
The Little Liar was
based, for the most part,
upon a Greek child, Nico
Krispis, who never told a
lie. His best friend, Fannie,
loves him because he never
lies. Nico’s older brother,
Sebastian, resents him for
both these reasons: his
honesty and because Fannie
shows attention to Nico.
When all of their young lives
are torn apart during the war,
it will take them decades to
find each other again.
Nico’s innocence and
honesty is used against his
tightly-knit community,
when a German officer
barters Nico’s reputation of
morality into a promise to
save his loved ones.
When the Germans
invade Greece, all of Nico’s
family is put on trains,
headed to what they’re told
are work camps. After being
gone all day, Nico returns
home to find his family
gone, and he’s confronted
by a German officer. This
officer tells Nico he can
save his family if he agreesto go to the train station with
the German officer and tell
the Jews they’re being sent
to a place with new homes
and jobs.
Nico, at ten years old,
agrees to this plan, knowing
that it will help to save his
family. However, it’s all a
deception, and the German
officer is using Nico’s
reputation of never lying to
trick the Jewish passengers,
who in reality are being sent
to concentration camps.
Nico doesn’t learn the truth
until after all the Jewish
people in his town have
been sent to Auschwitz.
When he discovers his own
duplicity, Nico vows to
never tell the truth again. He
then begins his betrayal to
others, in an attempt to get
to Auschwitz, with a plan to
save his family.
He will spend the
rest of this life changing
locations and identities,
in desperation to find his
family, knowing in his heart
that his family members
are no doubt already dead.
Although he has turned his
life into one of dishonesty,
Nico is desperate to find a
way to forgiveness — for
himself and for the people
he loves most.
The most horrifying
aspects of this story are
the vivid, gruesome details
of daily life in the prison
camps, and what the
prisoners are forced to do
to their fellow man, whether
it’s whipping, beating, or
starving others.
This novel, by Albom,
confronts the destruction
that lying can wreak, both
upon the world, as well as
on the individual lives that
get caught-up in it. It’s a
timeless story about the
power of love that ultimatelyredeems us, no matter how
deeply we blame ourselves
for our mistakes.
Narrated by the
voice of Truth itself, it’s
a heartbreaking tale of
the human spirit and the
goodness which lies
within it.
For anyone who
wants to learn more,
especially at this perilous
time we’re in for the
Jewish population, or
about the Holocaust
during World War
II, the story looks
at Truth and the
consequences of lies.
In short,
this parable is
about deception,
war, loss,
patience, love,
perseverance,
and most
importantly,
about Truth.
Albom said
Truth needs
a voice, and
about Truth,
he said, “You
can Trust the
story - I’m
not the
shadow
you
can’t outrun,
I’m the Truth.” And it’s an
important volume to read
because we should never
forget the Holocaust. Albom
showcases the horrors but
also the heroism, reminding
us that in great evil, there’s
always hope that good
people will do the right
thing.
It’s one of those books
that’s hard to describe,
hard to retell – it’s one that
everyone should read just to
understand Truth. I’d give
this 10 out of 5 stars – which
is why I read it three times.Book Corner
