PETER OF CELLE
(d. 1182). Born in the early 12th century in Aunoy-les-Minimes, Peter probably studied
in the schools of Paris before entering the monastery of Montier-la-Celle, where he
eventually became abbot. While Peter was at Celle, John of Salisbury visited him and
dedicted the Policratus to him. In 1162, Peter was made abbot of the monastery of Saint-
Remi in Reims, and in 1180 he became bishop of Chartres.
A supporter of monastic reform and strict observance of the monastic rule, Peter
corresponded with leading monastic figures of his day and was appointed by Pope
Alexander III to mediate quarrels and press for reform. He had an especially close
relationship with the Carthusian house of Mont-Dieu and was a promoter of the
Carthusians. He supported Alexander III in the dispute over papal succession. Some 175
of Peter’s letters survive, in addition to ninety-six sermons and a number of treatises. His
letters reveal him as involved in many of the major events and crises of his day, including
the Becket affair, while his sermons and treatises address matters of theology, worship,
clerical responsibility, and the monastic life.
