  1. In the narrative of Kurdish Preacher Mustafa, the imperial council’s negligence

in constructing an impregnable citadel along the Dardanelles following Venetian occu-
pation of Bozca and Limni Islands infuriated the sultana, which caused “the sea of her

ardor” to come “to a boiling point so she had two sound citadels constructed.” Kürd Hatib,
Risāle, fol. 1 7a. “Praise be to God,” Kurdish Preacher Mustafa continues, “because of that

valide sultan’s exalted endeavor and zeal,” infi del captains cannot even consider entering
the channel, but Muslim vessels “fl ow like water,” and as they pass they offer praises

and thanks to her, which will be to her benefi t on the Day of Judgment. Katip Çelebi also
credits the valide sultan for constructing the citadels. Katip Çelebi, Fezleke, 2:360.
