Seventh inning rally by Scots ends just short

Brett Bremer

The Fighting Scots and
Buccaneers aren’t having
any luck getting their OK
Red Conference set finished.
The Grand Haven varsity
softball team got one win in
over the Caledonia girls
April 23, but game two of the
doubleheader in Grand
Haven was postponed due to
weather. The Bucs and Scots
picked up where they left off,
but in Caledonia, Thursday
afternoon and the Grand
Haven girls fought off a late
Caledonia rally to take a 4-
win.
Game three of the set, the
ballgame set-up for the Scots
to be the home team, was
postponed in the top of the
second inning due to a down
pour that arrived after the
Buccaneers had built a 7-
lead.
The Fighting Scots didn’t

start getting runners around
the bases soon enough in the
ballgame they were able to
complete Thursday.
Caledonia pitcher Jaz
Dana threw well in a losing
effort. She went the full six
innings allowing four runs
on seven hits and three
walks. She struck out four,
and her defense was solid
behind her.
The Buccaneers managed
to put together a couple little
outbursts to score two runs in
the bottom of the third and
two more in the fourth
inning.
Grand Haven starter Bri
Borman was pretty great too.
She shut out the Fighting
Scots through six innings
and struck out 11 in 6 2/
innings. She did walk five
and allow six hits.
Two of those hits off of
Borman came to start the top
of the fifth for the Scots, but

a couple base-running goofs
kept Caledonia from capital-
izing on those two hits.
Marisa Kohn doubled with
one out in the top of the sixth
for Caledonia and went to
third on a wild pitch, but
Borman struck out the final
two Caledonia batters of the
inning.
Aliya Hernden knocked a
pinch hit single into right
field to get her team’s sev-
enth inning rally started.
Borman struck out the nest
two batters she faced, but
then Kala Bisterfeldt worked
a walk and Keira Sundstrom
bounced a ball by the
Buccaneer second baseman
for an RBI single to ended
the shut out.
The Scots’ Amber
Fairchild walked to load the
bases up and Kohn got an
RBI when Borman hit her
with a pitch. That was the
final pitch for Borman.
Caledonia had three on,
down two with two out, but
Lorelei Chciuk came on in
relief to get a strike out to
end the game.
Grand Haven improved its
OK Red Conference record
to 14-3 with the win. The
only three losses for the
Buccaneers in the conference
have come against the
Hudsonville team ranked
among the best teams in the
state in Division 1.
Caledonia is 8-9 in confer-
ence play so far. The Scots
have two on the schedule
against Hudsonville for
Monday and go to Rockford
for one Wednesday.
It was a busy week in the
OK Red for the Fighting
Scots. They swept a confer-
ence doubleheader with vis-
iting West Ottawa Tuesday
after splitting two at East
Kentwood Monday after-
noon.
The Scots took the opener
7-3 in Kentwood Monday.
Bisterfeldt and Kohn both hit
home runs. Bisterfeldt was
2-for-4 with a double, her

home run, two RBIs and a
run scored. Addy Lash went
2-for-3 with two runs and
two RBIs. Peyton Brenner
was 3-for-4 with two runs
and two RBIs. Mackenzie
Devries added a pair of sin-
gles in three at-bats and a run
scored.
Dana went the full seven
innings in the circle. She
struck out nine, walked two,
and allowed two earned runs
on seven hits.
The Falcons bounced back
for an 8-5 win in game two.
The 11 Caledonia hits in the
loss were all singles includ-
ing three each for Bisterfeldt
and Keira Sundstrom. Grace
Siekman, Aliya Hernden,
Sundstrom and Malia Burke
had one RBI each.
The Caledonia girls scored
12-2 and 13-1 wins in the

two games with West Ottawa
Tuesday.
C Hoop and Grace
Siekman were both 2-for-
with two doubles in the 12-
win to start the day. Hoop
drove in two runs and
Siekman had three RBIs.
Hernden had a single and a
double in her four at-bats.
Bisterfeldt had two RBIs.
Hernden got the turn in the
circle and earned the five-in-
ning win. She struck out
four, walked two and gave

up two runs on six hits.
There were ten different
Scots who had hits in the
13-1 game two victory.
Sophia Gauthier and Rian
Restau had two apiece
including a double for
Gauthier. Lash, Kohn,
Bisterfeldt, Brenner and
Devries had two RBIs each.
Amber Fairchild got the
pitching victory. She struck
out one, walked four and
allowed just one hit in five
innings.
