Impact After twenty-seven years as a major-league
pitcher, Ryan retired in 1993 with an amazing fifty-
three MLB records, including 5,714 strikeouts and
seven no-hitters. He was selected as a Major League
All-Star eight times. He posted a 324-292 win-loss
record. His jersey number was retired by three
teams—the Astros, Angels, and Rangers. In 1999,
Ryan was elected to the National Baseball Hall of
Fame, receiving the second-highest percentage of
votes in history after Tom Seaver. That same year,
Sporting News placed him on the list of the 100
Greatest Baseball Players. In 2003, he was inducted
into the Hall of Fame of the Texas Rangers.
