The Calhoun Christian and Gull
Lake girls’ soccer teams recently
produced Michigan High School
Athletic Association district champi-
onships, and both played in regional
semifinal showdowns this past
Tuesday (June 4).
- Calhoun Christian’s district
crown was earned on Friday, May
31 when the Cougars defeated
Jonesville 5-0 in a district title match
played at district host site Potterville
High.
The Cougars reached the district
final by first turning back Potterville
6-0 on May 29 in the semifinal
round.
Calhoun Christian’s opponent
this past Tuesday in the regional
semifinal round at Portage Northern
High was No. 6-ranked Kalamazoo
Christian.
The winner of that match advanced
to this Friday’s (June 7) 6:30 p.m.
regional final at Portage Northern
against the winner of this past

soccer squads win district crowns
Tuesday’s other regional semi featur-
ing Grandville Calvin Christian vs.
St. Joseph Our Lady of the Lake.
The regional titleist will then
advance to next week’s quarterfinal
round.
- And, Gull Lake’s district champi-
onship came in Division 2 in a tour-
ney hosted by Wayland Union.
First, on May 28, Gull Lake –
ranked No. 2 in the state – defeated
No. 4-ranked Plainwell 2-1 in two
overtimes in the district semifinal
round. Then, on May 30, the Blue
Devils topped No. 15-ranked Otsego
in the district final.
Also in the Wayland Union district,
Harper Creek posted a 5-0 shutout
win over Hastings on May 24 in the
first round, with HC then getting
eliminated in the district semis 2-0
by Otsego.
Note: Gull Lake last won an
MHSAA state crown in 2015,
when it finished a three-peat run of
state championships (GL won state
crowns back-to-back-to-back in
2013, 2014 and 2015).
Aside from district champs
Calhoun Christian and Gull Lake - and aside from aforementioned
Harper Creek – the other local
girls’ soccer squads to play in the
MHSAA postseason this spring were
Lakeview, Battle Creek Central and
Pennfield. - In a Division 1 district hosted by
Portage Central, Lakeview opened
with a first-round 10-0 victory over
BCC on May 22, and it then elimi-
nated Kalamazoo Loy Norrix 2-1 in
a district semifinal on May 28.
However, in the district title match
last Saturday (June 1), the Spartans
were eliminated 4-0 by No. 5-ranked
district host Portage Central.
- And, in Division 3, Pennfield
opened a district hosted by Quincy
with a 7-0 victory over Hillsdale on
May 24.
But in the semifinal round on May
30, the Panthers were edged 3-2 by
Olivet as PHS’s season came to a
close.
Olivet, by the way, then went on
to fall 4-0 to Eaton Rapids in the
district finale last Saturday, as ER
advanced to regionals.

cer postseason brackets and scores,
