ipe, Caribbean Hand Held Beef Pie,
was so good, he won the Globetrotter
Award last month in the National
School Lunch Hero contest from
Rich’s Products.
“It was for k-12 schools who use
some of their school compliant prod-
ucts that they have,” he said, “and
I made a Caribbean hand held meat
pie that I submitted to Rich’s and
then their chefs at their corporate
level recreated the recipe and then I
won the Globetrotter Award.”
Rumenapp said he won “bragging
rights for a year” and a trip to Boston
to attend a three-day school food ser-
vice trade show.
“They’ll be having my recipe on
the display there with other win-
ners,” he said. “So, it’s just a nice
honor to have.”
The recipe, he said, is based around
a whole grain biscuit dough.
“So, I rolled it out and I filled it

there’s a lot of kids who might not
be exposed to kohlrabi. It’s just a fun
thing that we do.”
Barnes agreed that it’s rewarding
to see students grow up on the food
they provide.
“It’s an opportunity to be with
these kids and you get to see them
grow,” he said, “and progress
through the school year and then end
up graduating. To make an impact as
far as food for them, it’s just reward-
ing.”
His award-winning recipe can be

crimped it sort of like a meat pasty,
that Michigan would know. It’s just
basically a handheld pie that you can
pick up and eat.”
Reumenapp said he happened to
enter as a result of receiving a ran-
dom email to food serviced directors
across the country.
“I was shocked, actually,” he said
about winning. “I always enter con-
tests like this just because I like to
do these types of things. I was like is
this real? Is it a scam?”
He’ll attend the trade show in July,
he said while manning the Harper
Creek Discovery Kitchen table at the
Battle Creek Farmer’s Market with
Chef Clarence Barnes.
“It’s going to be nice,” he said.
“The trade show floor is massive
and Rich’s has a big display and my
recipe will be on display for people
to see from around the country.”
Reumenapp has worked for
Chartwell’s Food Service for more
than 20 years, the last 10 in the
Harper Creek district where he
oversees food service at all of the
schools.
“I just like the creativity,” he said
of his longevity. “That’s such a big
part of our job, that we get to do.
Like coming out here today, this
kohlrabi salad, we do this is for the
kids an this Discovery Kitchen is
a program we offer in our district.
