God in his
infinite wisdom
called Jean
Elizabeth
Singleton
Mackey into His
loving care on
June 10, 2024.
Jean was born
on September
2, 1930, in
Apalachicola,
Florida, to
the late Rosa
Lee (Tillman) Millner and the late Leon
Singleton.
After graduating from Booker T.
Washington High School in Miami, Florida,
she moved to Battle Creek, Michigan,
which she called home for 75 years. She
met and married James C. Mackey, who
was stationed at Fort Custer Military base.
Early on, she was employed at the Post
Tavern Inn. She then secured a job in the
Dietary Department at the VA Hospital in
Fort Custer where she remained for sev-
eral years.
After the death of her husband, she
raised her four children as a widow and
leaned on her grandmother, the late
Carrie Tillman, and uncle, the late Herbert
Tillman, for guidance and support. Her
children and his children grew up together
as one unique family unit. Jean then
became employed as a domestic worker
for two prominent doctors in the city. She
developed a close relationship with these
families and remained a close confidant.
Her proudest accomplishment was to see
all her children become successful college
graduates. When asked how she did it,
her response would always be “... by the
Grace and Mercy of God.”
Jean accepted the Lord and was bap-
tized at the early age of 10. She joined
The Original Church of God #2 under Rev.
Minnie Steward. Later she became an
active member of Upton Avenue Original
Church of God under the pastoral leader-
ship of Bishop Harold Speights and then
Elder Arthur Rhan, Sr. She served on
the Usher Board, Hospitality, Ministry and
sang in the choir.
Jeannie Moe, as she was affectionately
called by her family, lived a long and ful-
filling life. She had an unmatched gift of
memory even in her latter years and a
sense of humor that was both amusing
and entertaining. She was an outstanding
cook and loved to bake, a skill she passed
down to both of her daughters. Jean was
an avid reader even into her late 80s. She
especially enjoyed reading autobiogra-
phies of famous African-Americans, often
sent to her by her grandchildren; all while
keeping up with the latest Breaking News.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; husband; sister, Marian Tillman;
daughter Rosalind (AKA Rose) Jones; and
grandson, Brandon Mackey.
To cherish her loving memory, she
leaves one daughter, Gwendolyn E.
Google of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; and
two sons, Elder James (Evelyn) Mackey of
Manchester, New Hampshire, and Deacon
Ronnie (Keishia) Mackey, of Tallahassee,
Florida; devoted cousins, Vernon Tillman,
Battle Creek, Michigan; Rev. Herbert
(Gloria) Tillman, Jr., of Chicago, Illinois;
Stephanie Files, Kernersville, North
Carolina; Winifred Tillman, Hutto, Texas;
Jean Tillman, Concord, North Carolina;
Prissy Greene, Apalachicola, Florida; 11
grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and
one great-great-grandchild; goddaughters,
Jasmine Walker and Cynthia Bush; special
family friend, Lois Harvey-Harbert; special
nieces and nephews of North and South
Carolina; and a host of other relatives and
friends.
Services were held on June 20, 2024,
at First Salem Missionary Baptist Church,
11 a.m., with Baxter Funeral & Cremation
Service in charge of the services.
