Doud, 101, of Battle
Creek, died June
24, 2024. Bob was
born April 27, 1923,
in Battle Creek to
Raymond and Doris
(Williams) Doud.
He graduated from
Battle Creek Central
High School in 1941
and went on to col-
lege at Michigan
Tech.
Bob would marry the former Loris
Schuster on August 27, 1955. After col-
lege, Bob got a job at Clark Equipment as
an electrical engineer, where he worked
most of his adult life.
Bob was a member of St. Thomas
Episcopal Church. In his younger days he
was an Eagle Scout and played hockey
into his 60s. Bob was an excellent swim-
mer and was involved with the swim-
ming community all the way up until his
passing. He held six state records for the
90-plus division and regularly participated
in the Goguac Lake Swim.Bob is survived by his daughter, Mary
Ann (Dennis) Jenkins; two sons, Daniel
(Elizabeth) Doud and Thomas (Sandra)
Doud; 10 grandchildren, Adrienne, Nolan,
Dominic, Brice, Greg, Stephen, Kyle,
Lauren, Shannon and Tara; and 11 great-
grandchildren, Collette, Oliver, Juliet,
Clark, Gavin, Audrey, Theodora, Ira,
Annicelli, Merrilee Jo and Eli.
Bob was preceded in death by his
loving wife, Lori; a grandson, Benjamin
Doud; his parents; two good friends, Walt
Redman and Bob Rabbitt; and his lifelong
best friend, Jack Baker.
A memorial service to celebrate Bob’s
life will be 11 a.m., Monday, July 15, 2024,
at Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home
& Cremation Care. Visitation will be one
hour prior to the service, starting at 10
a.m. Interment will follow at Memorial Park
Cemetery.

of Springfield,
Michigan, passed
away Saturday,
June 15, 2024,
at Rose Arbor
Hospice in
Kalamazoo.
He was born
December 9,
1948, the son of
Joseph Kitchen
and Annabelle (Crayton) Kitchen.
Fred attended and graduated from Battle
Creek Central High School. In June 1969,
he joined the United States Army, serv-
ing two years and seven months, receiv-
ing an honorable discharge in January- Fred worked for TRMI Inc., in Battle
Creek, Mich., and retired after several
years of dedicated work.
Fred was an avid and excellent golfer.
Those that knew him or played against
him already knew they had a small chance
to win. He also enjoyed playing cards,
traveling with his “best of everything,”
Hattie, listening to his music, and watching
football, basketball and golf.
Fred is survived by his significant
other, Hattie Hayes; brother Carl (Shelly)
Kitchen; best friend, Danny Moss; nieces,
Carma and Carlee Kitchen; six nephews;
and a host of grandnieces, grandnephews
and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his par-
ents; brother Joseph C. Kitchen Sr.; and
sister, Evangelist Janie M. Gorman.
Visitation took place on Tuesday, July,
2, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
at Baxter Funeral & Cremation Service.
Interment at Fort Custer National
Cemetery followed at 1:30 p.m. with mili-
tary honors.

He was born in

Wilson.
Clifford was
preceded in
death by his
father, Clifford H.
Rose; mother,
Gertrude Fultz
Wilson; step-
mother, Mary
Rose; spouses,
Betty “Anna”
Evans Rose (1943), Betty Rose and
Joanne VastBinder Rose.
Cliff is survived by three children from
his first marriage, Dianna (Bob) Shafer of
Lake Forest, CA; David (Cheryl) Rose of
East Leroy, MI; and Randy (Karen) Rose
of Traverse City, MI.
He also has six grandchildren, Jason
(Shannon) Rose of East Leroy, Kelli
Thompson of Climax, Curtis Rose (Daley)
of New York, Collin Rose (deceased),
Scott (Christy) Shafer of Nebraska, and
Melissa Shafer of Arizona; seven great-
grandchildren, Robert Thompson, Nathan
Thompson, Christopher Rose, Caitlin
Rose, all of Battle Creek, Zia and Simona
Shafer of Nebraska, and Hailey Shafer
of Arizona. Also surviving are a cousin,
Butch Smith of Battle Creek; stepbrother,
Mike Rose; and numerous nieces and
nephews.
Clifford was preceded in death by his
two brothers and three stepbrothers.
He had many special friends, fel-
low warriors and co-workers in areas
of passion for him, including Bob and
Alice Berger, Joe Payjak, Ernie and Sue
Hamilton, Mary Hart, Evelyn Bradfield,
Judy Lemon, and friend Clara, who kept
him “young at heart.”
He greatly appreciated the many friends
and family that supported him, especially
the staff and friends at Heritage Assisted
Living and Hospice, as his declining
health prevented him from connecting
with his friends and fellow musicians in
his active lifestyle.
Clifford worked for 35 years at Grand
Trunk Railroad, rising from Brakeman
to Conductor to Assistant Train
Master/Train Master and Assistant
Superintendent (in Chicago, IL). He
retired in 1982 at the age of 55.
He experienced many life opportunities
that fed his interests and love for singing
and playing country and soulful music
with his harmonicas and fellow enthu-
siasts and, of course, dancing with his
many partners. He loved having his family,
children and grandchildren in his life.
One of Cliff’s greatest passions in life
was his military service for his beloved
country. He entered the service at the
age of 17 and served in World War II (two
years as a U.S. Navy Seaman First Class
and seven years as U.S. Army Corporal,
with additional training and time flying
U.S. Air Force planes).
His post-military involvement continued
as a Lifetime Member of the American
Legion for 60-plus years in the State of
Michigan. He was proud to hold most
all offices in the Post #465, 3rd District,
including County Commander, District
Commander, Zone Commander and
Judge Advocate, preferring a “I wouldn’t
do that if I were you” leadership role, rath-
er than telling others what to do. He was
very involved as a lifetime member of the
VFW for 60 years, with several years as
Post Commander. He was Buddy Poppy
Chairman and Post Commander of #
during his residence in Florida. He was
also a member of The Forty and Eight
Club for 60-plus years, and the Elks,
and Masons Club. His role as a member
of the Advisory Board at Fort Custer
National Cemetery provided an opportu-
nity to continue serving his fellow veter-
ans and their families by coordinating and
ensuring dignity and recognition for those
who were and are interred at Fort Custer
Cemetery. Cliff was invited to Washington,
D.C., as a World War II vet to speak with
the President of the U.S. on behalf of the
Veterans Affairs in 1997.
Clifford kept his sharp wit and atten-
tion to detail intact until his passing with
a remarkable memory, a great sense of
humor, and a larger-than-life personality.
He will be greatly missed by his family
and all who knew him.
Because he did not wish to have a
funeral, a burial with full military honors
is being planned by the family.
A graveside service will
be at Fort Custer National
Cemetery in Augusta, Mich.,
on Wednesday, July 10, 2024,
at 2:30 p.m.

Lord guided him
home on June 23,
2024, surrounded
by his loved ones.
J was a prideful man of many traits, but
above all, he was a loving and devoted hus-
band to his partner of 39 years, wife Lyn Sabin;
a very proud and supportive father to daughter
Megan (Punky) Sabin and son Jesse (Boo)
Sabin. Later in life gaining a bonus daughter,
Marissa Sabin, who blessed him with who he
loved most, grandson Greyson Lee and grand-
daughters Delilah May and Palmer Grace. Hehas many aunts, uncles and cousins; special
cousin Mike (Tina) Sabin. Also cherishing
many nieces and nephews through family and
special friends.
He had a strong and special love for his dogs
and enjoyed beating his kids in Monopoly,
dancing, hunting, fishing, cooking for his loved
ones and making them laugh. He also gained
a bonus brother, Rick Johnson, and nephews
Rylan and Reese Johnson. To know J was to
love him.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
James and Betty Sabin; beloved sister Betty;
brother Jim Sabin; brother-in-law Joe Casarez;
nephews Jimmy “JD” Sabin, Stevie and Tony
Casarez; and
grandniece
Kelsey Torres.
A celebration
of life will be
held at a later
date.
