The yearly tradition of showcasing
Battle Creek area private gardens
to the public returns July 20 and 21
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. when seven
locations will comprise the 31st
Annual Summer Songs in Flower
Garden Tour.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $
the days of the tour and all proceeds
benefit the Leila Arboretum Society
(LAS), said Garden Tour Committee
Chairperson Sue Stetler.
“It’s a wonderful way to support
gardening and gardeners in our
community and it’s a fundraiser for
LAS,” said Stetler. “We also are very
passionate about gardening, all of us
so it gives us a chance to see other
people’s gardens.”
The event features a variety of
big and small gardens ranging from
meticulously landscaped flower and
plant beds to one vegetable garden-
ing operation.
“We have the Sunlight Gardens,
which is a very different thing for us
this year, which is about food and
maintaining the soils and a new kind
of attitude toward gardening, not just
for flowers,” she said, “and we’re
really excited about that.”

Stetler is happy to be broadening
the scope of what is gardening on the
tour.
“Some of the younger folks today
are more into where does my food
come from and ‘how can I grow
some in my own yard?’” said Stetler.
“So, I think Devon’s gardens will
give folks and opportunity to learn
and see and get some ideas about
how to do that.”
LAS is a non-profit organization
tasked with helping to maintain the
85-acre arboretum as well as its own
property at the Kaleidoscope Garden.
