The Hansons have also regu-

larly supported the Athens Fire

Department, the annual Easter egg

hunt, the Community Association

and Homecoming.

Their support extends to neighbor-

ing communities, as well, by annu-

ally sponsoring yearbook ads at both

Union City and Tekonsha schools.

Jeff and Sherry have two children,

Lance and Logan, and they have had

a hand in raising many bonus kids

and grandkids over the years.

“Their house, arms and dinner table

have always been open to anyone

who needed them,” said Brunner.

While their kids were in school,

Sherry could often be found shuttling

kids around on trips with the Chess

Club or the marching band, or chap-

eroning nearly every field trip.

Jeff could be found making and

delivering biscuits and gravy for the

high school students during SAT

testing days, or feeding an entire

sports team the morning after a big
win.
They often opened the restaurant
early or closed late to accommodate
the needs of those in the community.
In addition to feeding everyone
who comes into the restaurant, the
Hansons also operate a catering busi-
ness.
In the early 2000s, they also
started Hanson’s Custom Deer
Processing as a side business, where
they now serve up to 900 people
every hunting season.
Both of their businesses have led to
lasting relationships with hundreds of
community members, said Brunner.
“Many people have walked into the
Copper Kettle as strangers, just look-
ing for a bite to eat, and have walked
out with not only a full belly but a
full heart, as customers regularly
become like family to the staff,” she
noted.
Jeff and Sherry would like to thank
the Athens community for always
supporting them.

For the 13th straight summer,

Kim and Rusty Carroll of the local

Surf’s Up business headed the annual

Goguac Lake Fourth of July Boat

Parade during the early evening hours

of July 4.

Approximately 30 boats took part

in this year’s event, with most of the

water vehicles decked out in patriot-

ic-themed fashion.

The start and finish line along the

Goguac Lake shoreline was again the

area located in front of the former

Pasche’s Lakeside restaurant (off

Columbia Avenue in B.C.).

The parade of boats is always led

around the lake’s complete shoreline

by a member of the Calhoun County

Sheriff’s Department, and this year

that duty went to Deputy Matthew

Schimmel.

According to Kim Carroll, the fol-

lowing boats were rewarded with
prizes following the 2024 event:

  • Best Party Boat: “Mel’s Bake
Shop” – Mike and Melanie LeBarre.

  • Most Patriotic Boat: “Branches of
the Military (POW)” – KT Smith.

  • People’s Choice Award (award
for “Best Overall Boat”): “Top Gun”

  • Lisa & Ernie Smith, Brittany &
    Adam Rider, Sarah Walker, Becky
    McCormick, Jacob Smith.

  • Most Creative Boat Co-Winner:
    “Olympics” – Kathryn Simpson.

  • Most Creative Boat Co-Winner:
    “Pickleball” – Joyce Sickle.
Said Kim Carroll: “It was another
    great event featuring many, many
    great decorated boats and wonderful
people. Plus, we hosted the (Field of
    Flight’s) air show military squadrons
personnel (on Friday, July 5), so it
was another busy and fun holiday
week out on Goguac Lake again this
    year.”
