The weather conditions – overcast

skies, high humidity, a slight breeze

and temperatures in the low 60s –

might not seem ideal for a Fourth of

July Weekend outdoor activity.

But on the other hand, those kinds

of weather conditions are pretty

much perfect for distance runners.

And as a result, a good time was

pretty much had by all of the 652

people from near and far, old and

young, who participated and turned

in a finishing time at the sixth annual

Battle Creek Half Marathon/5K in

the early morning hours of Saturday,

July 6.

The start/finish line of the event,

again sponsored by the local Cereal

City Athletics organization, was

again located across Helmer Road

from the grounds of the annual Battle

Creek Field of Flight Air Show &

Balloon Festival at B.C. Executive

Airport that took place July 3-7 of

last week.

And the 652 number of total par-

ticipants/finishers, consisting of 279

in the Half Marathon and 373 in the

5K, set an event record – bettering

the former mark of 557 of last year.

Proceeds again this year from the

Cereal City Athletics group – made

up of Charles and Nikki Elder and

Tim and Emily Bandeen – went to

Talons Out Honor Flight.

Nikki Elder also noted that about
100-plus volunteers were again on
hand to help make everything run
smoothly – with “everything” run-
ning the gamut from day-of sign-ins
to the distribution of medals and
awards to making sure that adults of
legal age were able to take part in
the event’s traditional “Breakfast and
Brews” beverage and food gathering
at the end of races.

which covered grounds located
inside and outside of the airport –
was 25-year-old Salvador Escamilla
of Goshen, IN in a time of 1 hour, 11
minutes and 7.0 seconds.
The top female finisher in the
