Like father, like son.
Steve Kersten, a 1988 graduate
of Gull Lake High School, joined
his dad Norm in the Michigan High
School Football Coaches Hall of
Fame in late June during Class of
2024 induction ceremonies at the
Marriott Hotel in Troy.
After graduating from GLHS –
where he played football for four
years – Steve Kersten then played
four more years of football at Taylor
University in Indiana before joining
the coaching ranks.
Steve Kersten is currently the head
football coach at Williamston High,
a position he’s held since the start
of the 2000 season after joining the
school’s football coaching staff ini-
tially in 1995 and then re-joining the
Hornets’ staff in 1998.
Steve Kersten also coached at
Mattawan High from 1992-94 and
Fowlerville High from 1996-97.
In total, in 32 seasons coached,
Steve Kersten has compiled a record
of 186 wins and 129 losses.
Dad Norm Kersten became a mem-
ber of the MHSFCA Hall of Fame in
1987 – the organization’s sixth hall
of fame class.
Norm Kersten coached his football
at Southeastern Junior High in Battle
Creek for 27 years.
Steve’s mom and Norm’s wife
Willa Kersten was also in attendance
at Steve’s June 21 hall of fame induc-
tion ceremony.
Said mom Willa: “It was a very
positive evening at the Marriott Hotel
in Troy. “There were 14 inductees,
and each one said they were thank-
ful for the people in their lives that
helped and influenced them in their
coaching careers.
“Steve was humbled and honored,”
continued mom Willa, “to be one of
the inductees. He was thankful for
his wife, Carolyn, of 27 years who
has supported him. And Steve is also
thankful for the opportunity to invest
in the lives of young men as cham-
pions on the field, champions in the
classroom and champions in life.”
Steve Kersten, head football coach at Williamston High, was inducted into the
Michigan High School Football Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame during
ceremonies June 21 in the Detroit area. Shown in this photo (from left) are
mom Willa Kersten, Steve Kersten and dad Norm Kersten – the latter of whom
is also in the MHSFCA Hall of Fame. (Photo provided)
