Fifty-year-old Battle Creek Central
High graduate Kenyon Murray – the
state’s Mr. Basketball in 1992 who
starred at the University of Iowa col-
legiately and who now has two sons
playing in the National Basketball
Association – came home to the
Cereal City last Tuesday (July 10) to
speak to youngsters prior to the B.C.
Bulldawgz’ youth basketball team’s
annual benefit game against the
Battle Creek Police.
Murray, who for a long while now
has resided in Iowa, received a Key
to the City from B.C. Mayor Mark
Behnke during his appearance here.
“The reason he’s getting a Key
to the City is because Kenyon is a
Battle Creek legend who is Battle
Creek Central’s all-time leading
scorer, the city’s only Mr. Basketball
ever, and a great person who has
come back today to talk to the kids
about basketball and life and work-
ing hard – as well as about the

Battle Creek Central High graduate
Kenyon Murray, left, who was the
state’s Mr. Basketball in 1992 and
now has two sons playing in the NBA,
came back to B.C. last week to talk
to members of the Bulldawgz youth
basketball organization about hoops
and education. Murray is shown here

importance of families,” Behnke
said.
“Kenyon is just a great role model
in many ways.”
With last Tuesday’s event taking
place at the Battle Creek Family
YMCA Center – due to rain in the
area outside causing the event to be
moved from its originally-scheduled
site of Dr. Claude Evans Park outside
to inside at the Y Center – Murray
spoke to about 30 age 13-14 mem-
bers of the local Bulldawgz hoops
and life skills organization (which
has a total membership of about 120
youths) as well as to parents and care
givers prior to the game.
“I know a lot of today’s young-
sters here have dreams of playing
in the NBA some day, and I’m just
here today to help them understand
that there’s a lot involved with that
process,” said Murray prior to his
speech in front of kids and parents.
“Practicing basketball every day
of the week, getting good grades in
school, and having the support of
parents and others – like I had grow-

ing up in Battle Creek from people
like Fred Jones and Greg Williams
and my late high school coach Chuck
Turner, among many others – those
are the keys to success.
“And helping the kids who might
not believe in themselves, me being
here today gives me the opportu-
nity to tell them that hey, I came
from here, too, and the things I’ve
achieved, anybody can achieve if
you commit yourself totally to your
goal.
“Sure,” continued Murray, “there
are going to be some things you
don’t like to do when you’re going
through the process. There’s ups and
downs. Negative things to deal with.
But what’s important is how you
react to those negative things and
overcome them.”
Murray is the owner of Murray
Legacy Management, executive
director of the Murray Family
Foundation and host of the “Leave
Your Legacy” podcast out of Iowa.
