A total of 149 competitors of all
ages participated in the eighth annual
Cereal City Triathlon-Duathlon event
last Saturday morning (July 20) that
featured start and finish lines located
in the Willard Beach area in Battle
Creek.
The event, put on by the Cereal
City Athletics organization, featured
three divisions:
- A main Sprint Triathlon that con-
sisted of a 500-meter swim, a 20K
(12-mile) bike and a 5K (3.1-mile)
run.
- A Super Sprint Triathlon for
those ages 9-18 that featured a 400-
meter swim, a 10K (6-mile) bike and

a 3K (2-mile) run.
- And, a main Duathlon that was
made up of a 3K (2-mile) run, a 20K
(12-mile) bike and then a 5K (3.1-
mile) run.
Competitors in all three divisions,
which took place simultaneously in
and around the Willard Beach area,
were able to complete their tasks in
sunny and cool summer weather with
temperatures in the low to mid 60s.
Participants could compete as an
individual, or as a member of a two-
person or three-person relay.
All proceeds from the event went
toward scholarships for youths who
would like to compete in the CCA
group’s Cereal City KIDS Triathlon
that’s set for Saturday, Aug. 17, also
at the Willard Beach area. To sign up

The CCA group – run by Charles
and Nikki Elder and Tim and Emily
Bandeen – contributes over 50
scholarships each year for the KIDS
Triathlon event.
