Community leader and Battle Creek
native Shanay A. Settles has been honored
as the inaugural recipient of the Peter
J. Christ Leaders Fellowship for Battle
Creek.
“This prestigious fellowship recognizes
and supports emerging leaders within the
community, providing opportunities for
professional development and growth,”
according to a press release from the
Battle Creek Community Foundation
(BCCF).
Christ is a former president and CEO of
the BCCF.
“This fellowship means everything,”
Settles said of receiving the fellowship. “It
adds an extension to what I believe in, and
I believe in Battle Creek.”
The fellowship, created in honor of
Christ, aims to provide professional devel-
opment and learning opportunities for
Battle Creek’s emerging leaders through
customized mentoring, stipend support
and tools like The Leadership Challenge
LPI Self-Assessment.
Settles has a long history with the
BCCF, and as a community leader.
“Not only does she serve her community
as a Registered Environmental Health
Specialist who works for the Calhoun
County Public Health Department, but
Settles is the second generation of her
family to be involved with BCCF,” the
press release stated.
She followed her grandmother Elizabeth
Settles’ long tradition of volunteerism
with the foundation with an impressive
resume of her own.
To date, Shanay Settles has served on
several BCCF committees, as well as
stints with the Calhoun County Land
Bank Authority’s Washington Heights
Neighborhood Advisory Committee,
Washington Heights United Methodist
Church and Community “Hub of Hope,”
Substance Abuse Prevention Services
(Albion), and the Calhoun County
Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Committee, among others.
Settles said the fellowship is even more
special because of the person it honors.
Settles said she wants to honor Christ
with how she chooses to make use of the
fellowship.
She also noted he was instrumental
in getting her grandmother involved in
BCCF.
Settles said she is ready to step further
into a leadership role within the commu-
nity and that the fellowship will further
that goal.
“As I enter my next phase of my career,
I want to build my leadership,” she said.
Candidates can be nominated annually
for the fellowship.
Applicants are nominated based on their
leadership potential and the value profes-
sional development can add to that poten-
tial.
They are then invited to complete a
short application confirming their interest
in the fellowship.
A selection committee then reviews the
nominees and selects that year’s recipient.

The Michigan Green
Communities program awarded Battle
Creek the gold seal of achievement for
sustainability efforts and environmen-
tal leadership in 2023, says spokesper-
son Eric McClure.
The city was among 63 local
governments that participated in the
annual Michigan Green Communities
(MGC) Challenge, which recognizes
community achievements in such areas
as energy efficiency, climate adapta-
tion and resilience, recycling and envi-
ronmental justice.
Battle Creek was among 36 commu-
nities to achieve gold status.
“The city was recognized for exem-
plary action in multiple categories,
including planning, economic devel-
opment, land use, energy efficiency,
materials management — recycling,
composting, waste diversion — water
conservation and protection, clean
mobility and community engagement,”
said McClure.
The city is currently conducting its
first community-wide greenhouse gas
inventory, which will serve as a baseline
for measuring future progress in energy
efficiency efforts.
