Calhoun County Medical Care
Facility (CCMCF) and the Marian
E. Burch Adult Day Care Center
are holding a public open house
Thursday, Aug. 15 from 3-5 p.m. to
showcase the 120-bed, six-neigh-
borhood nursing facility that also
includes a trendy café, hair salon,
activity room, dining rooms and
more.
While the facility has not
undergone recent renovations,
Administrator Stephanie Cornish
explained that the festivities are
designed to “reintroduce” the facility
to the community.
“The pandemic was really a
downer for long term care facilities,”
explained Cornish. “There are people
who kind of forget we’re still here.
The adult daycare is up and running
and functioning. And, my initial goal
was just to let the community know
we are here, we are fully functioning
and able to provide services to their
loved ones within Calhoun County.”
Held in partnership with the Battle
Creek Area Chamber of Commerce,
the event will feature a ribbon-cut-
ting ceremony at 3:30 p.m., followed
by a short program in the building’s
Community Center where Cornish
will delivery some news she calls
exciting.
The event will offer public tours
of the entire facility, including the
Marian E. Burch Adult Day Care, a
department of the CCMCF, led by
director Alicia Davis.
The open house will also offer a
variety of activities and opportunities
including live entertainment, refresh-
ments, employment and volunteering
information and more.
“I think it’s been a long time since
much of the public has been in
the Calhoun County Medical Care
Facility,” said Cornish. “And people See MEDICAL on 13
don’t know they can still come in
and they can still have a tour. And,
it’s business as usual. We have some
new normals to processes if there’s
illness or concerns in the building.
But we’re here.”
Skilled nursing facilities in 2020
were hard hit by COVID-19, the
disease caused by the novel Sars-
CoV-2 virus, and measures to avoid
infection, which included barring the
public from entering and the need for
any employees sick with the disease
to stay home for at least 10 days, a
rule still in effect at CCMCF.
“There was a lot of misunderstood
guidance,” said Cornish. “At 9 a.m.
one day, we would have one piece
of guidance. We would just get that
info out to staff, then an hour and a
half later, we’d have different guid-
ance and it was really hard for us to
communicate effectively because it
