Color the Creek street art festival
will return to Battle Creek for the
ninth year Aug. 12-16 when 11 new
murals – including seven on the for-
mer Horrocks grocery store building
downtown – will sprout new colors
and designs thanks to 11 separate
artists.
“We will create new murals and
host four arts and culture events for
the whole community to enjoy,” said
event founder and coordinator, Justin
Andert. “We are excited for our
annual Youth Day event on Weds
Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at
Mill Race Park in downtown Battle
Creek.”
Youth Day activities will include
“Learn How to Spray Paint” with
local street artists, an 11 a.m. mural
unveiling at the W.K. Kellogg
Foundation across the street from
Youth Day, a tie dye station with
New Union Market, flower art with
Plumeria Botanical Boutique, chalk
art with Garald Barton and “Help
Paint a Mural” with Battle Creek’s
Jaziel Pugh.
Also onsite will be a GLFC Ice
Cream Truck.
The new WKKF mural will replace
“Family Tree” unveiled last year
by famous New Orleans muralist
Brandan Odums, aka BMIKE, featur-
ing a happy child surfing on many
hands.
“Each year, we want our banner to
represent what a world would look
like, where every child can thrive,”
said WKKF Communications Officer
Samantha Meinke. “Although we’re
based in Battle Creek, we fund
work across the United States and
internationally, and then we are also
deeply committed to supporting
what we call our priority communi-
ties, which are Battle Creek, Detroit
and Grand Rapids in Michigan, and
also Mississippi, New Orleans, New
Mexico, Haiti and Mexico.” The
new, annual banner unveiling is
designed to promote the theme that
“Every Child Thrives.”
“This year, we will feature a
piece called, ‘A Day of Pure Joy,’

by Haitian artist, Iris Geneviève
Lahens,” said Meinke.
The artist, who studied architecture
at the National School of Fine Arts
in Paris, began to paint in her coun-
try of origin, Haiti, and was quickly
called upon to represent it on the
international scene, notably in 1996,
in Miami, Fla. at the Art American
Exhibition.
In 2000, she moved to Quebec
where she staged a major solo
exhibition at the Centre d Art in
Port-au-Prince and then her career
was marked by an exhibition of 50
women from around the world at the
United Nations Headquarters in New
York.
