Dutch rabbits are popular, too, she
said, as are Netherland Dwarfs and
Polish rabbits that weigh around
three pounds.
“They’re very small and easy to
handle,” she said. “But that being
said, we actually have a young man
that wanted a Flemish Giant from
the very beginning and he was seven
years old, handling a 20-pound rab-
bit and he did it very well. I kid you
not, when that rabbit stretched out, I
think he was as long as the kid.”
Mini-rex, though, is “a super popu-
lar breed,” she said, because the wide
variety of colors.
Her own children have mini-rexes
as well as Californians and New
Zealands, which are both meat rab-
bits.
“They do make great pets and so
do cavies,” said Caddell. “But also,
there’s a lot of people who eat rabbit
meat and there’s a good market out
there for it, not just for people butit’s turning into a really big thing for
people who like to feed their dogs a
more natural meat, or, if they’re on
an all-meat diet, people will go to a
rabbit meat instead of beef or they’ll
go poultry. If their dogs are more sen-
sitive, they’ll go to rabbit or poultry.”
There is a high demand for rabbit
fur, too, she said.No members of her club are show-
ing cavies this year, but other clubs in
which rabbits and cavies are projects
will be at the fair to compete.
“Our club is strictly a 4-H club,”
Caddell explained, “but there are also
other clubs out there, if people don’t
want to be a part of 4-H, which is
totally fine, they can still be in a com-munity club and show at the fair.”
The Calhoun County 4-H Rabbit
and Cavy Club can not only be found
in the rabbit barn but will also have
a booth in the Boys and Girls Barn
filled with other types of projects
related and unrelated to rabbits and
cavies.
