“You might not think so, but put-

ting together demo derby cars is

expensive, and it comes out of your

own pocket unless you’ve got spon-

sors,” he said.

“I mean, if I need a carburetor,

and I go to the auto parts store, and

they say $500, I say can I get that

for $400. Because everything costs

money to do this. Which is why if I

blow up my motor during an event,

I’m looking for another motor that I

can rebuild and hopefully won’t cost

as much.

“And that’s the way it is for my

whole family,” continued Grove.

“It’s all out-of-pocket expenses to do

this. Some people have sponsors to

help defray costs, but in my family’s

case, getting sponsors is not the way

we usually go. Maybe a tire sponsor

We pay for it out of our own pockets,

and that’s because we love doing it.”

Grove said that the main area to hit

another car in during a demo derby

are the tire areas.

“You want to aim for the tires. You

knock a tire off, and that car’s not

going to go very far after that,” he

said. “Tire-wise, it’s pretty much the

same thing if you’re driving down

the road and your tire goes flat and

explodes. You’re going to have a

hard time getting that car even off the

road during situations like that, let

alone go much farther than that.”

So, that all said ... According to

Grove, exactly what is demo derby

participation all about in a nutshell?

“It’s fun, and it’s all about good

sportsmanship – especially when it

comes to me and my family mem-

bers,” he said.

“We’ve had nephews putting out

other nephews in demo derby events,

other family members doing the same

to other family members. But in the

end, no matter what happens, at the

end of the day, we’re all family and

we all love what we’re doing. And

everybody else in the competitions,

we tell them good job, good job,

because we’re good sports. And that’s

what most demo derby participants

are as well, really good sports.”

In conclusion for this article, said

CCF director Combs:

“I think the Demo Derby is consis-

tently the most popular grandstand

event for all ages because the people

are local who participate and our

county loves anything to do with

vehicles crashing into each other,”

she said.

“We sell out each year, and every-

one has a good time.”

And concluded Grove, regarding

precisely how much he really, really

loves participating and competing in

demo derby events:

“I’ve already told my wife Kim that

when my time comes, and I get cre-

mated, I want my ashes to be spread

some at the Calhoun County Fair and

at other demo derby sites where I’ve

competed and made good friends at,”

he said.

“Because demolition derby people

are all, for the most part, friendly

people and good people, and I want

my ashes spread around at places

I enjoyed being at doing my demo

derby stuff through the years.”
