A dog park at Northpointe Woods
created after residents raised money
last year is now outfitted with a
new, custom-made bench thanks to a
donation by State Farm Agent John
Chmiel.
“John Chmiel has made us our first
bench and donated it,” said dog park
coordinator, Cindy Cheyne. “He had
it made to advertise and we’re look-
ing for two, maybe more benches
from local businesses that would like
to advertise here.”
Elliott’s Woodshop at 1315 E.
Columbia Ave. in Battle Creek made
the bench.
“We’re excited,” said Cheyne.
“And, it’s comfortable.”
Chmiel said he was happy to
donate the bench not only to give
back to the community but to pro-
vide another form of advertising for
his business.
“I just kind of like supporting local
stuff like that,” he said, “and I don’t
do much other, like, advertising or

NorthPointe Woods dog park gifted with new bench
things like that, I just kind of support
things like that.”
Chmiel also has a bench at
Turkeyville USA near Marshall.
“I just think that kind of stuff for
the community is good,” he said.
“Cindy just talked about that they
were doing a dog park and that they
would like a bench and I said, ‘yeah,
I’ll do that.’”
Cheyne spearheaded the construc-
tion of the small dog park last year
for small dogs owned by the resi-
dents of Northpointe Woods senior
apartment complex
“We at one time had 22 dogs here,”
she said, “with the residents and
people who worked here would bring
their dogs and they all had to be kept
on leashes. And when I moved in, I
went, ‘this is not good.’ I said ‘we’ve
got to have a dog park.’”
Cheyne worked with management
and Justice Fence and then held a
silent auction to cover the costs.
“The maintenance personnel built
our little dog ramp,” said Cheyne,
adding that sod was also part of the
construction,” said Cheyne. “They
charged $3,200 for the fencing and
the rest was in the sod.”
Cheyne’s dog, Sophie, a Yorkshire
Terrier, enjoys playing with other
dogs, like Carlos, owned by Sara
Helm, and another dog, a springer
spaniel named Rosie.
“I like it,” said Helm. “He espe-
cially likes it.”
