said Thornton.
There are stones from
Independence Hall in Philadelphia;
stones that were used as ballast
from famous ships like the USS
Constitution (Old Iron Sides); stones
from the birthplace of Abraham
Lincoln; and a stone from Martha
Washington’s kitchen at Mount
Vernon; among others.
Among those items is a press wheel
from the first Duplex Printing Press,
which was made in Battle Creek; the
presses were used around the world
in the early 1900s.
“Brown was collecting stones and
other artifacts for his history Cairn
up to the time of his death in 1938,
and at that point, the tower was
never finished the way Brown had
intended. He died and the city ended
up capping the tower ‘as it was.’”
Thornton’s next program will be on
the history of Battle Creek Central

High School.
He said that creating these pro-
grams is not something he can do on
his own.
“I have wonderful resources
throughout our community that help
me pull together information and
some interesting stories about his-
toric sites around the area. There are
people in Battle Creek that care about
our history and heritage and support
each other in our efforts to share that
history.”
He added that each month he will
attempt to put together an entertain-
ing and informative program using
his collection of photos and stories.
Eventually, he will create a
YouTube channel where he will post
his programs.
“My hope is that by making these
stories easily available, educational,
and hopefully entertaining, people
will learn to appreciate our wonderful
home and learn to love Battle Creek
the way I do.”

Forks Senior Center in Albion is hold-
ing a public open house to celebrate
long-time volunteer Micki Ogilbee.
The open house will take place 3-4:30
p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, and will com-
memorate Ogilbee’s 17 years of vol-
unteer service as a Michigan Medicare
Assistance Program (MMAP) volunteer
counselor.
“Micki has been an institution in the
Albion community for many years. She
has consistently provided the highest
number of MMAP appointments within
our service area and has received many

awards of recognition from the state
MMAP office,” said Stacy Wines, CEO
of CareWell Services Southwest, which
administers the MMAP program.
“Forks Senior Center has benefited
greatly from Micki’s many years of
service as a Medicare counselor and
as a board member of the center,” said
Forks Senior Center Director Luann
Sommers. “Micki helped shape and
guide this organization through all her
years of service. We will miss her, but
know she has a well-deserved retirement
to enjoy.”

Senior center to honor long-time volunteer

Ogilbee also served on the Forks Board
for seven years, including two years as co-
president.
She also served on the Bronson Battle
Creek Community Partner Board, where
she advocated for improved services for
older adults.
Before volunteering, Ogilbee was
employed for three decades in public
schools as a special education instructor.
In 2015, Ogilbee was awarded the
Diamond Award of Excellence by the
Greater Chamber of Commerce in recog-
nition of her service to older adults.
In 2016, she was awarded the Tom
Feldpausch Community Loyalty Award,
and in 2019, she was selected for the
Joanne Konkle Volunteer Leadership
Award by Calhoun County Senior
Services.
