Rogers, who attended the Battle
Creek Area Math and Science
Center, plans to study nursing.
Isidro Rosas of Battle Creek, a
Harper Creek High School gradu-
ate. Rosas plans to study business

associate in science or study math

Additionally, for groups with larger
vehicle/buses, there will be a limit of
120 feet per entry.
“While we know this may be frus-
trating for some groups,” she said,
“we are trying to listen to feedback
from the community and not only is
space in the line up area challenging
with larger groups but it also makes
the parade even longer and drawn
out when we have 10+ minutes of
one entry passing through.”
The Battle Creek Christmas Parade
has been produced and presented by
the Harper Creek Optimist Club for
more than 40 years as a gift to the
Greater Battle Creek Area, she said.
The parade coincides with the start
of the Battle Creek International
Festival of Lights in downtown
Battle Creek, Mich.
“I am very pleased to announce
that this year’s Grand Marshal will
be Shelly Kehrle-Sulser, Executive
Editor from Battle Creek Shopper
News,” said Cornish. “Shelly has
been on the planning committee’s
radar as Grand Marshal for over a
year and even invited her to judge
the entries for awards in 2023.
Shelly’s 40 years of dedication tocovering Barry and Calhoun coun-
ties, including in Marshall and the
past 16 years so far in Battle Creek,
has made her a ‘Face of Battle
Creek.’ Nearly any community event
I personally have attended in recent
years, Shelly is there with a smile
on her face and her camera to catch
some of the most candid moments of
the event.”
Some have asked in recent months
how the Grand Marshal is chosen,
and the answer is quite simple,
Cornish continued.
“It is not a community popular-
ity contest or vote,” she explained,
“but rather committee members are
always keeping their eyes and ears
open in their everyday lives, and it
never fails that we have a few front
runners each year that have stood
out. As people get on our radar, we
make a note and then the committee
then discusses those individuals and
determines who is most deserving of
the honor.
“What makes Kehrle-Sulser most
deserving of recognition of 2024
Grand Marshal,” Cornish continued,
“is her passion for Battle Creek and
spending much of her time and ener-
gy to serving the community.”
Kehrle-Sulser said she was “gob-
smacked” when Cornish informed
her of the committee’s invitation.
“The Harper Creek Optimist Club
and specifically the Demarest family,
which includes Stephanie Cornish,
have shown immense dedication
to this annual, community favoriteevent,” said Kehrle-Sulser. “While I
don’t feel worthy of such an honor
for just doing my job for a commu-
nity I’ve come to love and respect,
it’s wonderful to feel the gratitude
of a community and a service club
that appreciates the work that we all
do at the Shopper News to showcase
all that is good and fun about Battle
Creek.”
Kehrle-Sulser added that she
accepted the honor on behalf of the
entire Shopper News staff and every-
one in the community who contrib-
utes their news for publication.
“This is why I never take credit
for the weekly editions,” she said,
“and, it’s why I always say, ‘it takes
a village to make this paper.’ It’s
definitely a team effort and I extend
gratitude to everyone who works on
the paper, from selling the ads to
pulling it off of the press and every-
where in between for getting into
the hands of the community so that
everyone knows what’s going on in
Battle Creek.”
The 2024 Parade Theme is Songs
of Christmas, chosen by Kehrle-
Sulser, who said she always thinks
back to her childhood, when partici-
pating in school-based Christmas
pageants taught her some of the sea-
son’s most iconic holiday songs.
Cornish and her husband Zach,
have been working together to coor-
dinate the parade for the past several
years.
