Hicks added, “Former President
Jimmy Carter is the greatest example
of the care hospice provides and he
has been on hospice for more than a
year.”
To be eligible to receive hospice
care, a physician has to certify that
patients have a terminal condition,
where if it runs its normal course,
life expectancy is six months or less.
The care Oaklawn Hospice pro-
vides includes nursing, social work,
spiritual care volunteers and aides
who can assist in many areas, includ-
ing bathing.
“Families are provided bereave-
ment services for a minimum of 13
months after the loss of their loved
one to offer support through their
grief and bereavement journey,” said
Hicks.
In addition, Oaklawn Hospice has a
grief support group that meets in the
community.
Another big misconception noted
by Hicks is that Oaklawn Hospice
only sees patients in Marshall.
“We go all the way to the Indiana
border,” said Hicks. “We go as far
north as Eaton County, west into
Kalamazoo County and east into
Jackson County.”
Oaklawn Hospice’s offices are at
13444 Preston Drive in Marshall and
may be contacted at (269) 789-3939.

Scams to steal your personal infor-
mation are at an all-time high.
That’s why it remains critical to
safeguard important personal docu-
ments like your Social Security card.
A Social Security card is not an
identification document.
In many situations, you only need
to know your Social Security number
(SSN).
Your physical card is not necessary
for most business needs.
Do you need evidence for work?
There are several documents you
can use instead of your card, includ-
Social Security cards are safer at home
ing a birth certificate; permanent
resident card or alien registration
receipt; an employment authoriza-
tion document; or Form I-94 or Form
I-94A.
You do not need to show your
physical card to apply for certain
benefits.
You can simply provide your SSN
for benefits, like housing, health
insurance or food assistance.
You should also know your
physical card is not required as evi-
dence for the Department of Motor
Vehicles.
The only state that requires a phys-
ical card is Pennsylvania.
For all other states, acceptable
evidence includes W-2 forms; Form
SSA-1099; non-SSA-1099 forms;
and pay stubs.
Keeping your card at home reduces
the risk of loss or theft - and helps
you keep your information safe.

card and information safe, visit the
Fraud Prevention and Reporting
