The Calhoun Intermediate School
District’s Calhoun Area Career
Center was recently recognized for
its efforts to prevent sudden cardiac
death by creating a safe learning
environment.
The Calhoun Area Career Center
(CACC) has been given the MI
HEARTSafe School award, said
spokesperson Jerry Johnson.
The designation comes through a
collaboration among the Michigan
Department of Health and Human
Services, Michigan Department
of Education, American Heart
Association, Michigan High School
Athletic Association and the
Michigan Alliance for Prevention of
Sudden Cardiac Death of the Young.
The CACC will remain a MI
CACC earns MI HEARTSafe School Award
HEARTSafe School for a three-year
period through the 2025-26 school
year.
As of November 2023, only 614
of nearly 3,000 schools in Michigan
have received this award.
“We are so proud of our staff and
their commitment to the safety of our
students from across the county,” said
CACC Principal Kristen Asiala. “We
work very hard to make sure our stu-
dents feel healthy, welcome and safe
each day they come to CACC.”
A HEARTSafe School must have:
a written cardiac emergency response
plan that is reviewed annually with
staff; a cardiac emergency response
team with current CPR/AED certi-
fication to respond to an emergency
during school hours; accessible, prop-
erly maintained and inspected AEDs
that are ready to use and have signs
identifying AED locations; and at
least one cardiac emergency response
drill per year.
“Our entire team has worked hard
to have the right tools, procedures
and training in place so that we can
ensure the wellness of our students,”
said Jessika Chicote, BSN, RN.
“As the CTE coordinator of Student
Health Care Needs & Services, I
applaud the CACC staff members for
their efforts to support and nurture
our students.”
