I want to recognize 2 Female

POW/MIA Shoshana Johnson

and Eleanor Ardel Vietti.

U.S. Army Spc. Shoshana

Johnson, the first Black female

U.S. prisoner of war in mili-

tary history was caught in an

ambush in Nasiriyah, Iraq.

Johnson was shot in both

ankles, beaten, and taken cap-

tive by enemy insurgents. A

POW for 22 days, she was

finally rescued by a Marine

Corps Delta Team during

Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Viett, a female missionary,

remains the only American

woman POW in Vietnam

whose fate is still unknown.

On the evening of May 20,

1962, 12 armed guerrilla fight-

ers descended on the colony,

ordering Vietti out of her

house.

Vietti was bound and taken

away, with no ransom demands

ever made.

Since 1994, the official posi-

tion within the U.S. government

has been that no American cap-

tured during the war remains

alive.

Whether soldier or missionary

these women are trailblazers in

our history.

They approached challenges

with bravery, took risks, and

inspired others.

Their determination to serve

our democracy will never be for-

gotten.

Warriors, there are presently 84

Michigan POW-MIAs from the

Vietnam War — 35 with remains

returned and 49 who remain

unaccounted for in Southeast

Asia.

women and men who are a testa-

ment to the strength and charac-

ter of our nation, a symbol of our

spirit and American trust.
