Michigan’s first 2024 elk hunt
is underway for those who were
selected in this summer’s elk license
drawing.
While the Michigan Department of
Natural Resources said it wishes all
hunters a safe, successful hunt, DNR
law and wildlife officials encourage
everyone to be alert to illegal hunting
activity.
Once considered extinct in the state
by the late 1800s, elk now are a pro-
tected and highly managed species in
Michigan.
“Conservation officers rely on a
collaborative relationship with the
public to solve elk and moose-related
crimes, and we very much value
those who report tips or suspicions
of illegal elk or moose activity,”
said Sgt. Mike Mshar, DNR Law
Enforcement Division.
The Safari Club International-
Michigan Involvement Committee,
instrumental in making the 1985
reintroduction of moose to Michigan
a reality, has been a long-time part-
ner in the effort to protect the state’s
Awareness, reporting of poaching key during elk season
small moose herd.
SCI-MIC offers a $1,000 reward to
anyone providing information leading
to the arrest and conviction of anyone
who has illegally killed a moose in
Michigan.
In 2019, that SCI-MIC offer was
extended to cover the illegal killing
of Michigan elk, and two anonymous
tipsters were each awarded $500
for the information they gave DNR
conservation officers that led to the
arrest, conviction and 2021 arraign-
ment of three northern Michigan rela-
tives for the 2019 poaching of three
cow elk in the Pigeon River State
Forest.
In 2022, the elk reward amount was
increased to $2,500.
The DNR also offers monetary
rewards.
Anyone who witnesses a natural
resources violation should call or text
the Report All Poaching hotline at
(800) 292-7800. Information also
may be left anonymously.
Researchers at Western Michigan
University in Kalamazoo are charg-
ing into the future of electric vehicle
(EV) technology with the announce-
ment of a $3.17 million U.S.
Department of Energy award.
The funding will spur development
of an integrated charger-inverter sys-
tem, which would help manufactur-
ers reduce the weight, cost, volume
and emissions footprint of EVs, an
important step in improving purchase
options for consumers, as well as
vehicle manufacturers.
“This proposal was a team effort,”
said Dr. Sandun Kuruppu, associate
professor in Western’s Department
of Electrical and Computer
Engineering, director of WMU’s
$3.17 million grant to energize EV research at WMU
Transportation Electrification and
Applied Mechatronics Lab and prin-
cipal investigator for the project.
“We have an excellent team that
includes multiple disciplines of aca-
demia, national labs, and important-
ly, industry partners that can make
this project a success.”
The “Multi-Input Integrated Smart
Charger-Inverter System with
Galvanic Isolation” is an effort to
develop an advanced EV powertrain
architecture that does not require an
additional charger, while
also adding advanced
features, such as vehicle-
to-grid capability, smart
charging interface and
variable battery size.
In developing the integrated
charger-inverter system, the team
will create prototypes to identify
technology needed to integrate into
the system and then proceed with a
full-scale model.
This project is a collaboration
between WMU, the University of
Tennessee, University of Kentucky,
Oak Ridge National Laboratory,
John Deere and BorgWarner.
