The Music Center in Battle
Creek is launching the fall 2024
I.M.P.A.C.T. program, a free after-
school initiative that provides music
education and performance oppor-
tunities to young people in the com-
munity.
I.M.P.A.C.T. (Inner-city Music
Proving Arts Can Teach) offers
beginner drumming and piano les-
sons, as well as participation in the
Sojourner Truth Choir, said Susan
Balbaugh, executive director of The
Music Center.
Classes have started, so students
can sign up anytime.
All sessions are held at The Music
Center, located in the Davidson
Building on the campus of Kellogg

Drum classes take place on
Mondays, while piano classes are
scheduled for Tuesdays.
Each class lasts 40 minutes and is
offered at 4:30 p.m., 5:20 p.m., 6:10
p.m. and 7 p.m.
Program director Carolyn Ballard
encourages families to take advan-
tage of this opportunity.
“Our piano and drum classes are
open to boys and girls in 2nd through
6th grade from any school. This is a
great way for kids to explore music
in a fun, supportive environment,”
Ballard said.
The Sojourner Truth Choir, which
has been a fixture in the commu-
nity since 2001, holds rehearsals on
Wednesdays from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at
The Music Center.
The choir welcomes students ages
7 and up.
“Kids are encouraged to explore
multiple options. They can try
drums, piano and the choir to see
what sparks their interest,” Ballard
