The Arc of Calhoun County is cel-
ebrating 70 years of service in the
community with a Platinum Jubilee
on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at
the Riverside Golf Club & Banquet
Center, located at 245 E. Columbia
Ave., in Battle Creek.
The Arc of Calhoun County has
been serving individuals with intel-
lectual and developmental disabili-
ties (IDD) and their families in the
community since 1954, said Clare
Tanner, executive director.
What began as an advocacy group
has grown to include education and
programming, said Tanner.
“All efforts have been in pursuit of
the vision for all people with IDD to

grow, succeed and have influence in
their community,” Tanner added.
“By supporting The Arc, whether
through attending events such as
the Jubilee, becoming a member,
or being a community site for our
programs, you become a vital part of
promoting social cohesion and creat-
ing an inclusive environment for all,”
said Lisa Wolf, business manager at
The Arc.
There is a fee for tickets; program
participants attend for free.
Proceeds from the Jubilee will sup-
port The Arc’s educational advocacy
program, keeping advocacy services
available to students and families
at no cost, as well as introducing
a new program in partnership with
Community Inclusive Recreation.
“One of the things we continue to
hear is the lack of connection people
with disabilities and their family
members feel, so we are collaborat-
ing with CIR to provide support to a
group of self-advocates who are orga-
nizing themselves to take on commu-
nity projects that reduce stigma and
promote inclusion for people with
disabilities,” said Tanner.
At the Platinum Jubilee, attendees
can enjoy table games, a raffle, a
silent auction, a cash bar, and hors-
d’oeuvres.
Sponsorship spots are still available
for the event.
“Calhoun County is so large and
still, after 70 years, there are people
who haven’t heard about [The Arc]
and what we offer,” Wolf said. “My
hope for the next 70 years is to con-
tinue expanding and diversifying our
programs while extending our reach
within the community.”
