Production/Manufacturing Category
was Super Cookie winning $7,000,
the Missing Link Cart & Catering
winning $3,000 and technical assis-
tance winners were Thickhum’s
Sweets with $2,500 and Delectable
Treats & Sweets with $1,200.
Finalist Da Snack Squad did not
appear at the event.
Food Prize, the brainchild
of Sprout BC founder, Jeremy
Andrews, and presented by Sprout,
Penetrator Events, the Small
Business Development Office, Battle
Creek Food Reimagined and more,
attracted about 300 people who could
not only taste the offerings of the 12
finalists for the pitch competition,
but purchase food from any of about
20 vendors.
Andrews said the attendance this
year was down by about 100 this
year.
Gabriela Perez-Herndandez,
director of Battle Creek Food
Reimagined, a division of Battle
Creek Unlimited, served as the
facilitator of the pitch competition,
held live in front of judges and a live
audience in a back room.
“I got a small grant for this event,”
said Andrews of how it got started.

“And then, I was like, ‘hey, people
that I put on food festivals with, do
you want to put this one on together
and maybe we can make it big-
ger?’” he said. “Also, I wanted to get
Gabby involved in this because they
have resources and they’re working
with small food businesses so it was
kind of perfect.”
Andrews said he hopes to continue
to improve the event in future years.
Perez-Hernandez said she is excit-
ed to help the small businesses with
the cash prizes.
“They have good plans and that
can help attract people to town,” she
said.
Hannah Sanchez of Thickum’s
Sweets Cheesecake said she makes
her fare at the Sprout Kitchen, a
commercial kitchen for small busi-
nesses, in Springfield.
“I supply Horrock’s here in Battle
Creek and in Lansing,” she said,
“Jack’s Grocery in Union City and I
just do a bunch of farmer’s markets
and events like this.”
It was her first time competing at
Food Prize.
“I’m trying to secure a location...
right now,” she said of why she
wanted to compete.
Drea and Noah Fox and Abigail
and Matthew Maletta, all of Battle
Creek, attended Food Prize together
to enjoy the food and the local cul-

ture.
“We love some of these small busi-
nesses and we were super excited
to come out and support,” said Drea
Fox, “and maybe run into a few busi-
nesses maybe we hadn’t gotten the
opportunity to see yet.”
The group said they tried many of
the offerings.
“We’ve always been fans of BC
Boba,” she said, “so specifically, we
came out to support them since we
love them and the cool stuff they’ve
done in Battle Creek but, like the

rolled ice cream shop, the lemonade
and it’s cool to see some who have
been successful and keep growing
like Simply Sensational Berries, we
love them.”
Abigail said she really enjoyed
learning more about Farm 2 Fork.
“It’s cool seeing the farmers who
actually raise the goats and the
lambs,” she said, “and then trying
their food.”
