create a string of slaves linked together. The images here (Figure 14.1) show


how widespread this simple but effective method was. Although most of these


images derive from royal monuments showing recalcitrant enemies being


brought to heel rather than everyday images of the slave trade per se, they


show the widespread diffusion of the technology of coffle-transport across the
