About 45 photographers joined us on Sunday 12th January at Huai Khwang MRT station for the first BPG photo
walk of 2025. Walk whisperer Mark found us a fantastic route through the Din Daeng sub-district, first heading
west along Prachasongkhro Road as far as Huai Khwang Market, then south through the back alleys to get to Soi
Prem Sombat and Soi Chan Mueang before following the Samsen canal to the Esplanade mall.
Naturally, not everyone followed the “official” route, but that’s always part of the fun on a BPG walk!
The cover shot, for example, is from the Jodd Fairs Ratchada market just north of Esplanade, which wasn’t
technically on the walk.
The neighbourhood we explored and photographed together is a mostly residential one. Thanks to a
concentration of National Housing Authority apartments, it’s quite a densely populated one. In fact, the
district was formed just to balance out population figures, separating from the Phaya Thai district to the west
in 1993.
The name din daeng (ดินแดง) literally means ‘red soil’ and comes from the distinctive colour of the dirt road
that was constructed here in the 1940s. That dirty old track became the Din Daeng Road, which runs through
the southern part of the district and becomes Rama IX Road. The fact that the district was named after a road
is somewhat apt as Din Daeng is considered the loudest district in the city by Thailand’s Pollution Control
Department, with noise pollution averaging around 71.6 to 81.6 decibels daily thanks to vehicle traffic. The
safe limit is 70 decibels.
We received submissions from 33 of the 45 photographers on the walk. That’s an impressive percentage
that helps to make this 108th edition of Bangkok Photo Walks a great representation of both the extraordinary
talents of BPG’s members and the remarkable sights we saw in Din Daeng. We hope that you enjoy the photos
from this walk and that they inspire you to join the next one in February!
Have fun,
Mark, Chutima, and Ben.
