320 east turkestan

Jewels

938: uncut gems from Khotan
951: 6 corals and a quantity of amber from Turfan.
966: 500 catties of amber from Khotan (with Kan chou).
1010: 371 catties of uncut gems from Kucha.
1017: uncut gems from Khotan.
Undated: pearls and corals from Khotan.

Of these items, very few were native to East Turkestan, chiefly horses,
camels, sheep, dogs, yak tails, jade, and some textiles. The vast major-
ity had been brought to the oasis states on the caravan routes. Such
items as the elephant, ivory, kingfisher’s feathers, frankincense, glass,
amber, western brocade, and corals had been passed along over vast
distances, first to the oasis states and then to China.
The Chinese paid for the goods received with copper cash, silver,
silver vessels, [porcelain] vessles, silk, brocade, golden belts, garments,
tea, and Buddhist sutras.
