Yi-ta


Yi-ta was situated south of Tokharia.
Between 605 and 617, envoys from Yi-ta to the Sui court offered
regional objects (Sui shu 83:13b; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 338:49a).
In the 6th month (July) of 748, envoys from Yi-ta to the T’ang
court offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5030).
In the 9th month (Sep./Oct.) of 659, Emperor Kao-tsung gave the
unrealistic order to establish Chinese commanderies and prefectures
out of Kashgar, Tashkent, Kabådh§n, Kish, M§imargh, Bukhara,
Tokharia, Yi-ta, etc. (Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6317).


Khuttal


Khuttal, in Chinese Ku-to, was situated north of the upper Amu-
Darya.
On May 4, 720, Emperor Hsüan-tsung of T’ang sent envoys to
recognize the king of Khuttal (Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.6740).
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 729, a son of the king of Khut-
tal presented two horses (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5028; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao
335:35a).
In the 2nd month (Feb./Mar.) of 733, envoys from the king of
Khuttal presented horses and female musicians. In the 8th month
(Sep./Oct.) , a chief from Khuttal offered gifts (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei pp.5028,
5029;Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 335:35a).
In the 3rd month (April) of 740, a chief from Khuttal was received
at the T’ang court (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5029).
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 750, a chief sent by the king of
Khuttal presented 43 humans and 30 barbarian (hu) horses (Ts’e-fu
yüan-kuei p.5030).


Chieh


Chieh, which was known to the Chinese since Sui times (Wen-hsien t’ung-
k’ao 339:55b), was probably situated somewhere in West Turkestan.
In 619, envoys from Chieh to the T’ang court offered a valuable
