On Dec.23, 789, it became known at the T’ang court that the Ho-
ku-to-lu-p’i-chia Qaghan had died. Te-tsung suspended the court for
three days and ordered the civilian and military officials from rank
3 and up to go to the Ministry of the Herald and condole with the
envoys who had announced the death (Chiu T’ang shu 195:9b; Tzu-chih
t’ung-chien p.7520).
On Dec.31, 789, the emperor sent the Herald and Concurrent
Grandee Secretary to recognize the late qaghan’s son as Ai-teng-li-
lo-ku-mo-mi-shih-chü-lu-p’i-chia, Who Is Loyal and Upright, Qaghan
(Chiu T’ang shu 195:10a; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.7520; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao
347:29a).
In the 2nd month (Feb./Mar.) of 790, Uighur envoys were received
at the T’ang court (Tse-fu yüan-kuei p.5032).
In the 4th month (May/June)^73 of 790, it became known at the
T’ang court that the Ai-teng-li-lo-ku-mo-mi-shih-chü-lu-p’i-chia, Who
Is Loyal and Upright, Qaghan had been poisoned and killed by his
Junior Qatun, a granddaughter of P’u-ku Huai-en, that his younger
brother had enthroned himself, that the usurper had been killed, and
that the murdered qaghan’s son A-ch’o had succeeded (Chiu T’ang shu
195:10a;Hsin T’ang shu 217A:10a; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.7521).
In the 6th month (July/Aug.) of 790, a Uighur envoy was paid
300,000 bolts of pongee for the horses he had presented (Chiu T’ang
shu 195:9b-10a).
In the 10th month (Nov./Dec.) of 790, the Uighurs officially
announced the death of the Ai-teng-li-lo-ku-mo-mi-shih-chü-lu-p’i-
chia, Who Is Loyal and Upright, Qaghan. Te-tsung commenced
mourning (Chiu T’ang shu 13:5a).^74
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 791, envoys from a Uighur chief
were received at the T’ang court (Ts’e-fu yüan-kuei p.5032).
On Mar.21, 791, Te-tsung sent the Junior Herald to recognize
A-ch’o as Qaghan Who Upholds Sincerity (Chiu T’ang shu 195:10b;
Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.2523).^75
In the 5th month (June/July) of 791,^76 Uighur envoys announced
that the Junior Princess of Ning-kuo had died. When the real Princess of
