yü-lu-mo-mi-shih-chü-chu-p’i-chia, Who Venerates Virtue, Qaghan
had died and had been succeeded by a younger brother. On Apr.9,
Emperor Ching-tsung, who had ascended the throne on Feb.25 of that
year, sent the Gentleman-of-the Palace of the Transit Authorization
Bureau to condole, sacrifice, recognize the new ruler as the Ai-teng-li-
lo-ku-mo-mi-shih-ho-p’i-chia, Who Displays Propriety, Qaghan (Chiu
T’ang shu 195:12a;Hsin T’ang shu 217B:1b; T’ang hui-yao 98:9a-9b;
Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.7843).^88
In the 7th (July/Aug.), 10th (Nov./Dec.), and 12th month (Jan./
Feb., 826) of the Chinese year 825, Uighur envoys offered gifts (Ts’e-
fu yüan-kuei p.5033).
After Emperor Wen-tsung had ascended the throne on Jan.9, 827,
he paid the Uighurs 500,000 bolts of pongee for their horses. Later
that year, he ordered a eunuch to go to the Ministry of the Herald
and pay the Uighurs 200,000 bolts of pongee for their horses (Chiu
T’ang shu 195:12b; Hsin T’ang shu 217B:1b).
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 829, a eunuch paid the Uighurs
230,000 bolts of silk for their horses (Chiu T’ang shu 195:12b).
In the 3rd month (Mar./Apr.) of 833, Uighur envoys arrived with
camels and horses and announced that the Ai-teng-li-lo-ku-mo-mi-shih-
ho-p’i-chia, Who Displays Propriety, Qaghan had been murdered by
his subordinates and had been succeeded by a nephew. On Apr.27,
Emperor Wen-tsung suspended the court for three days and ordered
all civilian and military officials from rank 3 and up and the officials
of the Imperial Chancellery from rank 4 and up to go to the Ministry
of the Herald and condole with the envoys (Chiu T’ang shu 17:9b; 195:
12b-13a;Tzu-chih t’ung-chien p.7879; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 347:29b).^89
On May 22, 833, Wen-tsung appointed the General of the Resolute
Guard of the Left and Regent of the Imperial City as General of the
Gilded Mace and Concurrent Grandee Secretary to go as envoy to
the Uighur court, condole and sacrifice, and recognize the new ruler
as Ai-teng-li-lo-ku-mo-mi-shih-ho-chü-lu-p’i-chia, Who Manifests
Trustworthiness, Qaghan (Chiu T’ang shu 195:13a; Tzu-chih t’ung-chien
p.7884).
In the 6th month (June/July), 835, Uighur envoys offered seven
female mounted archers and two children of the Sha-to Turks as
