great chiefs of the eight tribes of the Tsang-ts’ai presented fine horses
to the Sung court (Sung shih 491:18b).
In the 7th month (July/Aug.) of 1001, Chen-tsung appointed one
chief as General of the Gentlemen Who Observe Obedience, and
another as General of the Gentlemen Who Find Peace in Civiliza-
tion. During the same year, the chief of the Pi-ning tribe offered fine
horses to the Sung court. An edict ordered that he be paid generously
(Sung shih 491:18b).
In 1002, a son of the chief of the Mieh-pu tribe offered gifts to the
Sung court. Chen-tsung conferred the titles of General Who Cherishes
Civilization and of General Who Has Attached Himself to Virtue on
prominent members of the tribe. Others were appointed General-
in-chief to Keep the Distance in Peace and General Who Cherishes
Civilization. Chen-tsung also presented gold and silk. In the 12th
month (Jan./Feb., 1003) of the same Chinese year 1002, envoys of the
Mieh-pu tribe offered gifts. The emperor questioned and rewarded
them (Sung shih 491:19a-19b).
In the 2nd month (Mar./Apr.) of 1003, Chen-tsung presented tea to
a Tang-hsiang chief. In the 3rd month (Apr./May), he gave brocade
robes and silver belts to one Tang-hsiang mission and robes and belts
to another. In the 7th month (August), he appointed the son of the
chief of the Pu-li-yeh tribe^5 as General Who Cherishes Peace (Sung
shih 491:20a; 20b, 21a).
In the 6th month (July) of 1003, Tang-hsiang were received at the
Liao court (Liao shih 70:11a).
In the 1st month (Jan./Feb.) of 1004, Chen-tsung presented a Tang-
hsiang chief with tea (Sung shih 491:21b).
In the 8th month (Aug./Sep.) of 1004, Tang-hsiang offered gifts to
the Liao court (Liao shih 70:11b).
In 1005, Chen-tsung gave gifts to the new chief of the [Pu-]yeh-li
tribe (Sung shih 491:22a).
In the 3rd (Apr./May) and 7th month (Aug./Sep.) of 1005, Tang-
hsiang offered gifts to the Liao court (Liao shih 70:11b).
In 1006, Chen-tsung presented Tang-hsiang with brocade robes
and silver belts (Sung shih 491:22a-22b).
On 1009, the great chief of the Wu-ni tribe offered gifts to the Sung
court (Sung shih 491:23a).
