On Aug.21, 938, T’ai-tsung sent the Minister of the Right of the
Department of State Affairs as envoy to the Later Chin court (Liao
shih 4:1b).
On Aug.31, 938, Emperor Kao-tsu sent two envoys to present the
honorific titles to the Khitan Empress Dowager and Emperor T’ai-
tsung. They arrived at the Khitan court in the 9th month (Sep./Oct.)
(Chiu Wu-tai shih 77:4b; 137:8a; Liao shih 4:1b-2a; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao
345:17b).
On Oct.12, 938, Khitan envoys arrived in Lo-yang to escort
the Princess of Hsing-p’ing to their country. She was a daughter of
Emperor Ming-tsung of Later T’ang and had been married into the
prominent Chao family. Chao Te-kou had been the king of Pei-p’ing
and a Military Commissioner. His son Yen-shou had become the
husband of the princess and had had with her the son Tsan. Both Te-
kou and Yen-shou had been captured by the Khitan, but the princess
and her son had remained in China. Emperor Kao-tsu of Later Chin
now allowed the family to be reunited (Chiu Wu-tai shih 77:6a;Sung
shih 254:11b-12a).
On Oct.26, 938, T’ai-tsung sent a Court Attendant and others as
envoys to the Later Chin court (Liao shih 4:2a).
On Oct.30. 938, the Khitan Prefect of the Palace Writers, who
had been sent as envoy to the Later Chin, was welcomed outside the
capital and conducted to the palace. He there presented to Emperor
Kao-tsu the honorific title of Emperor Who Is Bravely Martial and
Shiningly Righteous. On Nov.23, envoys from Kao-tsu to T’ai-tsung
thanked for the title (Chiu Wu-tai shih 77:8a, 137:8a; Hsin Wu-tai shih
8:6b;Liao shih 4:2a; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 345:17b).
In the 11th month (Nov./Dec.) of 938, the Later Chin envoys who
had arrived at the Khitan court in order to present the honorific titles
were given a banquet. On Nov.27, they were given an audience (Liao
shih 4:2a).
On Dec.3, 938, the Later Chin envoys presented to the Khitan
Empress Dowager the honorific title of Empress Dowager Who Is
Extensively Benevolent, Luminously Illustrious, Respectfully Grand,
and Responsive to Heaven. On Dec.17, they presented to T’ai-tsung
the honorific title of Emperor Who Is Astutely Refined, Divinely Mar-
tial, Takes Heaven as His Model, Is Initiator of Fortune, Brightly
Virtuous, Displayer of Sincerity, Reacher of Truth, Broadly Reverent,
Luminously Filial, and Heir of Sagacity (Liao shih 4:2a).
