On Feb.17, 1032, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of the Empress Dowager^118 (Hsü Tzu-chih
t’ung-chien ch’ang-pien p.988).
On May 22, 1032, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to
congratulate on the birthday of Jen-tsung^119 (Hsü Tzu-chih t’ung-chien
ch’ang-pienp.990).
In the 7th month (Aug./Sep.) of 1032, the Liao court sent envoys
to the Sung court to congratulate on the birthday of Jen-tsung in the
following year^120 (Liao shih 18:3b).
On Dec.20, 1032, two Sung envoys arrived at the Sung court to
congratulate on the birthday of Hsing-tsung (18:3b).^121
On Jan.16, 1033, four Sung envoys arrived at the Liao court to
congratulate on the New Year’s Day of Feb.3 (Liao shih 18:3b).
On Jan.28, 1033, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate the Empress Dowager on the New Year’s Day of Feb.3. On
Jan.29, other envoys arrived to congratulate Jen-tsung on the New
Year’s Day (Hsü Tzu-chih t’ung-chien ch’ang-pien p.998).
On Feb.7, 1033, Liao envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of the Empress Dowager^122 (Hsü Tzu-chih
t’ung-chien ch’ang-pien p.998).
On Apr.30, 1033, the Sung Empress Dowager, widow of Chen-
tsung, died. On May 2, an envoy was sent to announce her death to
the Liao Empress Dowager. On May 6, two other envoys were sent to
offer her testamentary gifts. The Liao Empress Dowager immediately
sent the Commissioner of the Palace of Increasing Sagacity, a Serving
within the Palace and Drafter, the Commissioner for Sacrifices and
Military Commissioner of the Army of Heavenly Virtue, the Grand
Judge, the Military Commissioner of the Army West of the [Yellow]
River, and the Commissioner of the Office of Presentations to condole
and sacrifice. This mission was received at the Sung court on Aug.28
(Sung shih 10:4a; 242:9a; Liao shih 18:4a; Hsü Tzu-chih t’ung-chien ch’ang-
pienpp.1001, 1009).
On Sep.2, 1033, Jen-tsung ordered that because the ritual gifts of
Liao after the death of the Empress Dowager had been more ample
