adjusted on Oct.22, presumably because of Hsing-tsung’s death (Hsü
Tzu-chih t’ung-chien ch’ang-pien p.1669).
On Sep.26, 1055, Liao envoys to the Sung court announced the
death of Hsing-tsung. Jen-tsung ordered mourning and prohibited
music. He sent envoys to condole and sacrifice, all in accordance with
precedent (Sung shih 12:9b; Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 346:23b).
On Oct.9, 1055, Tao-tsung sent the Tribal Judge of the Left and a
Han-lin Academician to present the testamentary gifts of his late father
to the Sung court, and to thank for the condolence and sacrifice. This
mission was received at the Sung court on Jan.6, 1056 (Sung shih 12:
10a;Liao shih 21:2a).
On Oct.11, 1055, Tao-tsung sent envoys to officially announce his
enthronement (Liao shih 21:2a).
On Dec.1, 1055, Hsing-tsung was buried in the presence of Sung
envoys (Liao shih 21:3a).
On Jan.2, 1056, the later famous Ou-yang Hsiu (1007-1072) con-
gratulated as Sung envoy to the Liao court on the enthronement of
Tao-tsung (Liao shih 21:3b).
On Jan.15, 1056, envoys from the Liao [Grand] Empress
Dowager^157 and from Tao-tsung arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day of Jan.20. When these envoys took
leave on Jan.25, they were given a banquet (Hsü Tzu-chih t’ung-chien
ch’ang-pienp.1676).
On Apr.8, 1056, Liao envoys to the Sung court, a Military Com-
missioner and a Grandee Remonstrant and Consultant of the Left,
thanked for the congratulation, presented a portrait of Tao-tsung, and
requested a portrait of Jen-tsung. This was agreed upon, but appar-
ently no action was taken (Sung shih 12:10b; Sung hui-yao kao 5257:56a;
Wen-hsien t’ung-k’ao 346:23b).
Jen-tsung’s birthday celebration on May 30, 1056, was cancelled
for that year (Hsü Tzu-chih t’ung-chien ch’ang-pien p.1682), presumably
to observe the mourning for Hsing-tsung.
On Feb.2, 1057, envoys from the Liao [Grand] Empress Dowager
and from Tao-tsung arrived at the Sung court to congratulate on the
New Year’s Day of Feb.7 (Hsü Tzu-chih t’ung-chien ch’ang-pien p.1704).
On Apr.25, 1057, a Liao envoy to the Sung court again requested a

(^157) I.e. Tao-tsung’s grandmother, Hsing-tsung’s mother. She was the former
Empress Dowager, who became Grand Empress Dowager after Hsing-tsung’s death
in 1055.
