origin, such as the elephant tusks, rhinoceros horns and hides, corals,
and naphta. Tea did not grow in the Northern Han, and the shipment
this state presented in 954 had therefore to have been imported. The
tame elephant of 1055 had originally come from Chiao-chih/Annam
or Champa. The Sung had a surfeit of these animals and was prob-
ably glad to pass on one of them to the Liao court.
