to the war. It had to agree to paying Chin the same annual tribute
it previously had rendered Liao, i.e. 200,000 ounces of silver and
300,000 bolts of silk, and it did not receive the long-desired Sixteen
Commanderies but only Yen and adjoing territories in return for a
large indemnity (Sung shih 22:8b).
On Sep.19, 1123, Emperor T’ai-tsu of Chin died, aged 56. He was
succeeded by a younger brother, born in 1075, who ascended the
throne on Sep.37. This was Emperor T’ai-tsung. In the 12th month
(Dec./Jan., 1124) of the Chin year 1123, T’ai-tsung sent two envoys
to the Sung court to announce T’ai-tsu’s death (Chin shih 2:22b; 3:
1a-1b, 2a).
On Jan.14, 1124, Chin envoys arrived at the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the New Year’s Day of Jan.24, but because of the death
of T’ai-tsu the Sung court was suspended (Sung shih 22:9b).
In the 3rd month (Mar./Apr.) of 1124, Chin requested grain from
Sung. It was not provided (Sung shih 22:10a). By this time, relations
between Sung and Chin had soured. There was no agreement as to
how the treaty of 1123 should be implemented, and Chin had realized
the feebleness of Sung.
In the 4th month (Apr./May) of 1124, Sung envoys condoled and
sacrificed at the Chin court on the death of T’ai-tsu. They had received
their orders on Feb.16, 1124 (Sung shih 22:9b; Chin shih 3:4a).
On Sep.10, 1124, T’ai-tsung sent envoys to the Sung court to con-
gratulate on the birthday of Hui-tsung^3 (Chin shih 3:5a).
On Nov.4, 1124, Chin envoys to the Sung court presented T’ai-
tsu’s testamentary gifts (Sung shih 22:10b).
On Nov.22, 1124, Sung envoys to the Chin court congratulated
on the birthday of T’ai-tsung (Chin shih 3:5a).
On Feb.5, 1125, the New Year’s Day, two Chin envoys congratu-
lated at the Sung court. They had received their orders on Jan.11
(Chin shih 3:5b).
In the 1st month (Feb./Mar.) of 1125, Sung envoys to the Chin
court congratulated on the enthronement of T’ai-tsung. They had
received their orders on Aug.24, 1124, and presented three horse
trappings adorned with gold and silver, three horse whips of ivory and
tortoise shell, eight gold and silver cups, three incense braziers shaped
like lions, three garments, ten baskets of fruit, ten jugs of honey, and
