RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MATGO

AND VYGOTSKY’S COGNITIVE

LEARNING THEORY

Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)

  • The ZPD refers to the gap between what a student can do
independently and what they can achieve with guidance.

    • In Matgo, students are challenged with mathematical
problems that push them slightly beyond their current
      abilities.

  • By working in groups or pairs, stronger students help
weaker ones, ensuring that everyone progresses within
    their ZPD.

Scaffolding

  • Scaffolding is the support given to students until they can
    perform tasks independently.

  • In Matgo, teachers or peers provide hints, prompts, or
step-by-step guidance when students struggle with
conversions between fractions, percentages, and decimals.

  • As students gain confidence and understanding, the support
is gradually reduced, allowing them to solve problems
    independently.

Language and thought

  • In Matgo, students verbally explain their reasoning, discuss
strategies with peers, and engage in meaningful
    conversations about mathematical concepts.

  • This interaction helps them internalize knowledge and
strengthen their conceptual understanding of fractions,
    percentages, and decimals.
