hadleftDamascusfortheRed Sea,carryingwiththemalargenum-
berofpropagandaleafletsandtheapparatusfor a wirelessstation
theyhadorderstoconstructattheYemeniportofHodeida.Stotz-
ingenhopedtocharteradhowatal-Wejh,thenextcityonthecoast,
northofYanbo,butbecauseoftheBritishpatroloftheseathemis-

exploded.FaysalandhisbrotherAlicuttheHijazrailroadlinenear
Medina;whileHusayninMeccaproclaimedtherevolt,his forces at-
tackedtheTurksinseveralcitiesoftheHijaz.OnlyStotzingenand
twoofhismen,includingNeufeld,managedtoescapebacknorth
alongtheRed Seacoastandreturnto Syria;theothersdiedatthe
handsoftheBedouinattackers."Inthegroup'sfranticscramblefor
safetybaggageandnumerousdocumentswereleftbehind,someof
whichthesharifsoonturnedover;fromthemtheBritishlearnedthe
Germanplans."
