For Students: Learning Objectives
and Topics for Discussion
By Jonna Kwiatokowski
Chapter 1
Learning Objectives
- Differentiate between typical behaviors and traits of
high sensation-seekers versus low sensation-seekers. - Use personality theories to understand the traits
that might be confused with sensation-seeking. - Understand how Marvin Zuckerman identified sensation-
seeking as a unique trait. - Explore a measure of sensation-seeking that includes
subscales for thrill- and adventure-seeking, experience-
seeking, disinhibition, and boredom susceptibility. - Interpret your sensation-seeking score and compare it
to other possible profiles of scores.
Discussion Questions
- Based on the various personality theories, what are
some myths about sensation-seekers that are
debunked? Were you surprised by any of the person-
ality traits that are not necessarily related to sensa-
tion-seeking? - Imagine yourself in Zuckerman’s Ganzfeld Procedure, or
try it with these simple instructions:www
.instructables.com/id/Ganzfeld-Hack-Your-Brain-the-Legal-
Way/. How do you imagine your response would compare
to those Zuckerman eventually labeled as high sensation-
seekers? - Think of a favorite high thrill-seeking fictional charac-
ter. What profile would you assign to that character
