Getting Connected (Internet, Utilities &

Services)

The Lifelines of Daily Life

Settling in isn’t just about unpacking your bags — it’s about switching on the lights, turning on the tap,
and logging onto Wi-Fi. For returning residents, reliable utilities and services are more than
conveniences; they are symbols of security, comfort, and progress.

This chapter explores how to:

  • Set up electricity, water, and waste disposal.

  • Get connected to high-speed internet and phone services.

  • Navigate Jamaica’s postal and courier systems.

  • Manage household services like gas, cable TV, and streaming.

  • Deal with the bureaucracy and avoid common pitfalls.

Section 1 – Electricity: Powering Your Home

Provider: Jamaica Public Service (JPS)

  • The sole electricity distributor in Jamaica.

  • Service application requires:
    o TRN (Tax Registration Number).
    o Government-issued ID.
o Proof of address (lease, utility bill, or letter from Justice of the Peace).
o Deposit (varies, often refundable after 2 years).

 Tip: If you’re moving into a newly built home, request an electrical inspection certificate before JPS
connection.

Reliability & Costs

  • Electricity costs are among the highest in the Caribbean, driven by fuel imports.

  • Bills are calculated by kWh usage plus a fuel & IPP charge.

  • Frequent power cuts occur in some areas; many residents invest in backup generators, solar
    panels, or battery storage.
